Live dates and countdowns appear when JavaScript is enabled. The calendar rules and dated tables below remain available.
Choose a time zone to see when this calendar date starts there. This does not change the celebration or its tradition.
The digits measure elapsed time in 24-hour days. Calendar days can differ when clocks change. Your device clock provides the current time. The countdown updates when you return to this page.
This New Year countdown follows January 1 in the Gregorian calendar. Its target is the midnight that ends December 31 and begins the new year. Choose your own time zone or another one to follow the same calendar transition in a different part of the world.
Date and calendar rule
New Year's Day is January 1 every year. The countdown ends at 00:00 on January 1 in the chosen time zone, not at the start of December 31. During January 1 the page celebrates the arrival of the new year; afterwards it counts toward the next January 1.

New Year's Eve is the night before
New Year's Eve means December 31. A party can begin hours before the midnight shown here, and a broadcast may follow the time zone of its host city. If you are joining an online gathering, agree on the city or time zone as well as the date so everybody is counting toward the same instant.
A worldwide celebration without one worldwide midnight
The calendar turns over locally. January 1 can already have arrived in one place while it is still December 31 elsewhere. The time-zone selector lets you explore those differences without changing the event. Other new-year celebrations, including those based on lunar or religious calendars, have their own rules and are not represented by this January 1 countdown.
Traditions and practical preparations
New Year customs range from shared meals and resolutions to public gatherings. Spain's twelve midnight grapes and Italy's lentils are examples of distinct local traditions, not requirements for celebrating. For your own plans, check transport, venue entry times and the local programme separately. The countdown marks the calendar change rather than the start of a concert or fireworks display.
Questions about this celebration
- Which year is the countdown counting toward?
- It selects the next January 1 that has not finished in your chosen time zone. The live target displays its full date and year.
- Can I follow New Year somewhere else?
- Yes. Choose a time zone for that location. This changes the midnight being followed without changing the January 1 calendar rule.
- Does this follow Lunar New Year?
- No. This page follows Gregorian New Year. A celebration using another calendar needs a separate event with its own date rule.
