Easter Sunday changes date each year. This countdown follows Western Easter, calculated using the Gregorian ecclesiastical calendar, rather than assuming a fixed day in March or April. It counts to the beginning of Easter Sunday in your chosen time zone and remains in its celebration state throughout that day.
Date and calendar rule
Western Easter is the Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that falls on or after March 21. The full moon is defined by church tables, not by a live observation of the Moon. Easter therefore falls between March 22 and April 25 inclusive. The dates below use Gregorian computus.

Easter Sunday is not the whole holiday period
For Christians, Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. Holy Week leads up to it, while Good Friday comes two days before Easter Sunday and Easter Monday comes the day after. School breaks, public holidays and family trips can cover a longer period. Their dates should not be inferred from the Sunday countdown alone.
Western and Orthodox Easter
Many Eastern churches use a different calculation based on Julian calendar tables. Their Easter can coincide with Western Easter or fall on another date. Changing the time zone to Athens, for example, does not turn this page into an Orthodox Easter countdown: the calendar tradition remains Western. A different tradition needs a separately identified event.
Planning an Easter weekend
Services, family meals, decorated eggs and egg hunts are associated with Easter in different communities. Their actual schedules are local. Use the year-by-year table to compare weekends, then check the dates of school holidays and transport services for your destination. - Why does Easter move every year?
- Its rule combines a weekday with an ecclesiastical lunar calendar. Unlike Christmas, it is not tied to one fixed month and day.
- Is this the date of Orthodox Easter?
- Not necessarily. This is Western Easter Sunday. Orthodox calculations may produce a different date, even for someone viewing from the same city.
- Can Easter fall in March?
- Yes. In the Gregorian Western calculation it can fall from March 22 through April 25. It is always a Sunday.
